Electron Binding in a Superatom with a Repulsive Coulomb Barrier: The Case of [Ag44(SC6H3F2)30]4– in the Gas Phase
2020
The electron binding mechanism in [Ag44(SC6H3F2)30]4- (SC6H3F2 = 3,4-difluorobenzenethiolate) tetra-anion was studied by photoelectron spectroscopy (PES), collision-induced dissociation mass spectrometry (CID-MS), and density functional theory (DFT) computations. PES showed that [Ag44(SC6H3F2)30]4- is energetically metastable with respect to electron autodetachment {[Ag44(SC6H3F2)30]3- + e-} and features a repulsive Coulomb barrier (RCB) with a height of 2.7 eV. However, CID-MS revealed that [Ag44(SC6H3F2)30]4- does not release an electron upon collisional excitation but undergoes dissociation. DFT computations performed on the known structure of [Ag44(SC6H3F2)30]4- confirmed the negative a…
Optical measurement of the longitudinal ion distribution of bunched ion beams in the ESR
2013
Abstract An optical technique to study the longitudinal distribution of ions in a bunched ion beam circulating in a storage ring is presented. It is based on the arrival-time analysis of photons emitted after collisional excitation of residual gas molecules. The beam-induced fluorescence was investigated in the ultraviolet regime with a channeltron and in the visible region using a photomultiplier tube. Both were applied to investigate the longitudinal shape of bunched and electron-cooled 209Bi80+ ion beams at about 400 MeV/u in the experimental storage ring (ESR) at GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt, Germany. Bunch lengths were determined with an uncertainty of abo…
Recent gold cluster studies in a Penning trap
2002
Abstract A progress report is given on the investigation of metal clusters with an ion cyclotron resonance (Penning) trap. The examples are taken from the recent studies on gold clusters. In particular, the monomer and dimer evaporation is monitored as a function of cluster size. For the particular case of Au 7 + this study is expanded to include the energy dependence of the branching ratio. In connection with the sequential decay of Au 8 + the information can be used for a model-free determination of the dissociation energy of Au 8 + . A second line of studies concerns the production, properties and storage behavior of polyanionic gold clusters. Such species have recently been produced by …
